UI team receives $400,000 NSF grant to enhance engineering education

Jennifer Fiegel, professor of chemical and biochemical engineering, and Shaun Vecera, director of the UI Honors Program, have received a three-year, $400,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to integrate cognitive science-based strategies from the Learning at Iowa initiative into second-year engineering courses.

The TA Mentor Program, launched by the Center for Teaching as a pilot in fall 2023, embeds trained graduate students as peer teaching mentors in large courses and departments. The program aims to support graduate student teaching assistants (TAs), expand faculty capacity, and improve the undergraduate learning experience.
